What Is It Like to Be a Private Investigator?

Guide to Hiring a Private Investigator

So, what is it really like to be a private investigator?

Fast cars? Espionage? Stakeouts? Surveillance? Spying?

It turns out that I do none of that. A lot of PI mythology is, in fact, mythical.

Interestingly, if you ask 15 different private investigators what they do, you might get 15 different answers.

Even If if you ask my closest friends, they have a whole different perception of what I do. Every time one friend calls me, he envisions me in full camouflage gear, in the woods on a stakeout.

Truth is that I don’t own a piece of camouflage and I haven’t done a “stakeout” in eons.

I was featured in Lifehacker’s Career Spotlight, What I do as Private Investigator which answers some frequently asked questions about what it is like to be a private investigator like typical hours (there is no such thing as “typical”), what kind of experience you need, misconceptions and some advice to those who are interested in joining the profession.

I hope you enjoy.
